- The Home Department is the most pivotal Department under the Government of Sikkim. It acts as a Nodal Department to coordinate between the various departments under the Government of Sikkim.
It oversees the implementation of the overall policies of the State Government. The prime objectives and responsibilities of the Home Department are maintenance of law and order, crime control, Police administration, administration of justice, internal security matters, liaison with the Central Government and other State Governments and the Army authorities.
- The subjects dealt with by the Home Department are notified vide Government of Sikkim (Allocation of Business) Rules, 2017, as amended from time to time. The very works under this Department are further allocated to four sections namely the Administration Section, Accounts Section, Confidential Section and Protocol Section. In addition to these sections, Vigilance (Police) and State Prisons are also essential parts of Home Department. The Rajya Sainik Board which looks after the welfare of ex-servicemen is also under the administrative control of Home Department.

3. The primary objectives and responsibilities of the Home Department are:
Maintenance of Law & Order, Police Administration, Internal Security, Conferment of State Meritorious Awards, Inter-Intra State/Departmental issues including issues pertaining to Restricted Area Permit, Protected Area Permit and Inner Line Permit. The Protocol Section of the Home Department is vested with the authority in organizing all statutory State ceremonial functions and providing protocol courtesies to the visiting dignitaries, State Guests and the Council of Ministers. The State ceremonies include the Swearing-in- Ceremony of Governor, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Chief Justice and Council of Ministers.Sikkim House, New Sikkim House, Sewa Bhawan and DKK Bhawan at New Delhi and the Sikkim House at Guwahati, Assam are also under the administrative control of the Home department. Similarly, the State Circuit House and the Chintan Bhawan at Gangtok are administered by the Home Department. Further, the Rajya Sainik Board which looks after the welfare of ex-servicemen and the Sikkim Relief and Rehabilitation Cell are also under the administrative control of the Home Department.
